Dr. John O’Brien,

Dr. O'Brien is a nationally acknowledged expert on market design for wholesale and retail gas and electric power markets and has also conducted power plant siting studies and valuation of electric assets for industry stakeholders. He is also a noted expert on clean coal technologies including IGCC.
Previous employers included Skipping Stone where he was principal and head of strategic consulting. He was president and ceo at both Wheeled Electric Power and Direct Gas Supply Corporation. Wheeled Electric was a pioneer in facilitating the restructuring of the electric industry, through both marketing initiatives and the regulatory intervention process, to enable energy companies to serve retail electric and gas customers in a competitive market. Direct Gas Supply Corporation capitalized on the late-1980's deregulation of the natural gas markets and by 1990 achieved over $50 million in sales to high margin commercial customers and a customer market share of over 50% in New York State 's gas market. DGS was acquired by Texas Utilities in 1994 and is now TXU Energy Services.
Dr. O'Brien was also a Full Scientist at Brookhaven national Laboratory where he studied and consulted on various areas of energy regulation in the Laboratory's Department of Nuclear Energy for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Department of Energy, as well as numerous other federal agencies. He achieved a national reputation for studies in organization and management in the electric utility industry. Dr. O'Brien has published over 50 reports, articles, law reviews and a book while at Brookhaven.
Dr. O'Brien has a B.A. in Chemistry, and an M.A. and Ph.D. Maxwell School of Public Administration at Syracuse University .
